BACKGROUND: Psychological maltreatment by teachers and peer victimization are significant public health issues among youth. However, few studies have verified transactional associations between psychological maltreatment by teachers and peer victimization at the within-person level and the mediating roles of depression and aggression have yet to be fully evaluated. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the transactional associations between psychological maltreatment by teachers and peer victimization from middle childhood to early adolescence, separating within- and between-person variation. The study also examined whether youth's depression and aggression mediated the associations. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: A total of 4945 Chinese youth (Mage = 9.92 years, SD = 0.73 53 % boys) completed a packet of measures on five occasions at 6-month intervals from May of 2017 to May of 2019. METHODS: Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Models (RI-CLPMs) were used to distinguish between- and within-person effects. RESULTS: The results indicated that: (a) Psychological maltreatment by teachers predicted peer victimization, and vice versa; (b) Depression (but not aggression) mediated the associations from peer victimization to psychological maltreatment by teachers. CONCLUSIONS: The findings supported bidirectional spillover effects between adverse teacher-student and peer interactions and demonstrated at the within-person level that such effects were transmitted indirectly via youth's depression.

BACKGROUND: Pretricuspid shunts have been associated with poorer survival rates in patients with Eisenmenger syndrome compared with postricuspid shunts and complex lesions. However, the risk stratification for persistent pulmonary hypertension (PH) in this population remains uncertain. METHODS AND RESULTS: We retrospectively enrolled 103 patients with pretricuspid shunts with high total pulmonary resistance >4.5 Wood units (estimated pulmonary vascular resistance ≥3 Wood units). During a mean±SD follow-up of 20.95±24.84 months, 32 patients developed postoperative persistent PH after shunt correction. We identified 3 significant predictors of postoperative persistent PH, including mean pulmonary artery pressure after inhaled oxygen ≥40.5 mm Hg (odds ratio [OR], 7.78 [95% CI, 2.02-30.03]; P<0.01), total pulmonary resistance after inhaled oxygen ≥6.5 Wood units (estimated pulmonary vascular resistance ≥5 Wood units; OR, 12.23 [95% CI, 2.12-70.46]; P<0.01), and artery oxygen saturation at rest <95% (OR, 3.34 [95% CI, 1.07-10.44]; P=0.04). We established the prediction model with the C-statistics of 0.85 (95% CI, 0.77-0.93; P<0.01), and the C-statistic was 0.83 (95% CI, 0.80-0.86) after bootstrapping 10 000 times with a good performance of the nomogram calibration curve for predicting persistent PH. CONCLUSIONS: Our study presents a multivariable risk stratification model for persistent PH after shunt correction in adults with pretricuspid shunts. This model, based on 3 hemodynamic predictors after inhaled oxygen, may assist in identifying individuals at higher risk of persistent PH after shunt correction.

BACKGROUND: Previous cross-sectional and unidirectional longitudinal studies have identified positive associations between childhood victimization and neuroticism in children. However, these studies have not simultaneously examined multiple common sources of childhood victimization (family abuse, teacher abuse, and peer victimization) in relation to neuroticism nor have they distinguished between- and within-person effects. Moreover, the moderating role of child sex in their associations has yet to be fully evaluated. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the within-person longitudinal associations between three common sources of childhood victimization and neuroticism in Chinese children and whether these effects differed between boys and girls. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The sample included 4315 children (55.1 % boys) with an average age of 9.93 (SD = 0.73) years from a large city in China. METHODS: Participants completed self-report measures on five occasions across two years, employing six-month intervals. Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Models (RI-CLPMs) were used to distinguish between-person and within-person effects. RESULTS: Results included: (a) Family abuse (excluding sexual abuse) and peer victimization directly predicted subsequent increases in neuroticism at the within-person level and vice versa, whereas teacher abuse and neuroticism did not reveal significant longitudinal relations at the within-person level; (b) The effect of family abuse on neuroticism at the within-person level was stronger in boys, while the effect of peer victimization on neuroticism at the within-person level was stronger in girls. CONCLUSIONS: Prevention and intervention strategies targeting high neuroticism and childhood victimization should consider the roles of both family and peer systems.

The Mongolian racerunner, Eremias argus, is a small lizard endemic to Northeast Asia that can serve as an excellent model for investigating how geography and past climate change have jointly influenced the evolution of biodiversity in this region. To elucidate the processes underlying its diversification and demography, we reconstructed the range-wide phylogeographic pattern and evolutionary trajectory, using phylogenetic, population genetic, landscape genetic, Bayesian phylogeographic reconstruction and ecological niche modeling approaches. Phylogenetic analyses of the mtDNA cyt b gene revealed eight lineages that were unbounded by geographic region. The genetic structure of E. argus was mainly determined by geographic distance. Divergence dating indicated that E. argus and E. brenchleyi diverged during the Mid-Pliocene Warm Period. E. argus was estimated to have coalesced at~0.4351 Ma (Marine Isotope Stage 19). Bayesian phylogeographic diffusion analysis revealed out-of-Inner Mongolia and rapid colonization events from the end of the Last Interglacial to the Last Glacial Maximum, which is consistent with the expanded suitable range of the Last Glacial Maximum. Pre-Last Glacial Maximum growth of population is presented for most lineages of E. argus. The Glacial Maximum contraction model and the previous multiple glacial refugia hypotheses are rejected. This may be due to an increase in the amount of climatically favorable habitats in Northeast Asia. Furthermore, E. argus barbouri most likely represents an invalid taxon. The present study is the first to report a range-wide phylogeography of reptiles over such a large region in Northeast Asia. Our results make a significant contribution towards understanding the biogeography of the entire Northeast Asia.

Targeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS) can be used to perform Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) complex-specific amplification or target capture directly from sputum samples, yielding simultaneous coverage of many genes and DNA regions associated with antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Performance comparisons of tNGS and another molecular testing tool, Xpert MTB/rifampicin (RIF), have been empirical. Here, using a dilution series of a RIF-resistant clinical isolate of MTB, we found that tNGS had a slightly lower limit of bacterial detection (102 CFU/mL) compared with Xpert MTB/RIF (103 CFU/mL) in culture medium. However, the minimum detection limit of the rpoB S450L mutation in this isolate was significantly lower with tNGS (102 CFU/mL) than with Xpert MTB/RIF (106 CFU/mL). Sputum samples collected from 129 suspected pulmonary tuberculosis patients were also prospectively studied with the clinical diagnosis as a reference, revealing that the sensitivity of tNGS (48.6%) was higher than those of culture (46.8%), Xpert MTB/RIF (39.4%), and smear microscopy (34.9%) testing. Notably, AMR analysis of 56 MTB-positive samples as determined by tNGS revealed high mutation frequencies of 96.4%, 35.7%, 26.8%, and 19.6% in the following AMR-associated genes: rrs, rpoB, katG, and pncA, respectively. The findings of this study provide theoretical support for the differential clinical application of tNGS and Xpert MTB/RIF and suggest that tNGS has greater application value in tuberculosis drug resistance monitoring and prevention.IMPORTANCETargeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS) can be used to perform Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) complex-specific amplification or target capture directly from sputum samples, yielding simultaneous coverage of genes and DNA regions associated with antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The Xpert MTB/RIF assay is a commercial system that uses the nucleic acid amplification detection method for rapid (2 hours) diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB). The cost of the tNGS and Xpert MTB/RIF assays in this study was similar, at USD 98 and USD 70-104 per sample, respectively, but the time required for tNGS (3 days) was much longer than that required for the Xpert MTB/RIF assay. However, tNGS yielded more accurate results and a larger number of AMR-associated gene mutations, which compensated for the extra time and highlighted the greater application value of tNGS in TB drug resistance monitoring and prevention.

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification and m6A-related RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) play vital roles in various aspects of circRNA metabolism. Hsa_circRNA_103820 is implicated in the pathogenesis of multiple cancers, including lung cancer (LC). Moreover, bioinformatics analysis has suggested that hsa_circRNA_103820 possesses potential peptide-coding ability. Thus, we aimed to investigate the function and peptide-coding potential of hsa_circRNA_103820 in this study. Cell viability, apoptosis rate, and migratory and invasive abilities were assessed using CCK-8, flow cytometry, and transwell assays, respectively. Hsa_circRNA_103820 level was measured using RT-qPCR assay, and the interaction between hsa_circRNA_103820 and IGF2BP3 was examined through RIP and RT-qPCR assays. The coding ability of hsa_circRNA_103820 and protein levels were determined through western blot assay. The results showed that hsa_circRNA_103820 reduced cell viability, attenuated cell migratory and invasive abilities, and promoted cell apoptosis in LC. IGF2BP3 negatively regulated hsa_circRNA_103820 expression and interacted with it. Hsa_circRNA_103820 knockdown alleviated si-IGF2BP3-mediated anti-viability, anti-migration, anti-invasion, and pro-apoptosis effects in LC cells. Moreover, a 188-amino acid (aa) peptide encoded by hsa_circRNA_103820 decreased cell viability, facilitated cell apoptosis, and inhibited cell migration and invasion in LC. Collectively, hsa_circRNA_103820, regulated by IGF2BP3, encodes a 188-aa peptide and inhibits the malignant progression of LC cells by inhibiting the AKT pathway.

BACKGROUND: Machine learning (ML) has been widely used to predict suicidal ideation (SI) in adolescents and adults. Nevertheless, studies of accurate and efficient models of SI prediction with preadolescent children are still needed because SI is surprisingly prevalent during the transition into adolescence. This study aimed to explore the potential of ML models to predict SI among preadolescent children. METHODS: A total of 4691 Chinese children (54.89 % boys, Mage = 10.92 at baseline) and their parents completed relevant measures at baseline and the children provided 6-month follow-up data for SI. The current study compared four ML models: Random Forest (RF), Decision Tree (DT), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), to predict SI and to identify variables with predictive value based on the best-performing model among Chinese preadolescent children. RESULTS: The RF model achieved the highest discriminant performance with an AUC of 0.92, accuracy of 0.93 (balanced accuracy = 0.88). The factors of internalizing problems, externalizing problems, neuroticism, childhood maltreatment, and subjective well-being in school demonstrated the highest values in predicting SI. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study suggested that ML models based on the observation and assessment of children's general characteristics and experiences in everyday life can serve as convenient screening and evaluation tools for suicide risk assessment among Chinese preadolescent children. The findings also provide insights for early intervention.

The use of microbial electrochemical sensors, with electroactive biofilms (EABs) as sensing elements, is a promising strategy to timely measure the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of wastewater. However, accumulation of Coulombic yield over a complete degradation cycle is time-consuming. Therefore, understanding the correlation between current output and EAB metabolism is urgently needed. Here, we recognized a tail stage (TS) on a current-time curve according to current increase rate─a period with the least electron harvesting efficiency. EAB adopted a series of metabolic compensation strategies, including slow metabolism of residual BOD, suspended growth, reduced cell activity, and consumption of carbon storage polymers, to cope with substrate deficiency in TS. The supplementary electrons provided by the decomposition of glycogen and fatty acid polymers increased the Coulombic efficiencies of TS to >100%. The tail current produced by spontaneous metabolic compensation showed a trend of convergent exponential decay, independent of BOD concentration. Therefore, we proposed the TS prediction model (TSPM) to predict Coulombic yield, which shortened BOD measurement time by 96% (to ∼0.5 h) with deviation <4 mg/L when using real domestic wastewater. Our findings on current output in TS give insights into bacterial substrate storage and consumption, as well as regulation in substrate-deficient environment, and provide a basis for developing BOD sensors.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the associations between prenatal temperature exposures and low birthweight (LBW) and modification by cash transfer (CT) receipt. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Five rural districts in Northern Ghana. POPULATION OR SAMPLE: A total of 3016 infants born to women interviewed as part of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP 1000) impact evaluation between 2015 and 2017. METHODS: Birthweight was collected using household surveys administered to LEAP 1000 eligible women. We used a UNICEF-developed multiple imputation approach to address missingness of birthweight and applied an empirical heaping correction to the multiply imputed birthweight data. Survey data were linked to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis 5-hourly temperature averaged to weeks for 2011-2017 using community centroids. Using distributed-lag nonlinear models, we explored the lag-specific associations between weekly average temperatures greater than 30°C and LBW, and stratified by LEAP 1000 treatment. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Low birthweight (<2.5 kg). RESULTS: Twelve percent (n = 365) of infants were LBW; the mean ± SD birthweight was 3.02 ± 0.37 kg. Overall, increasing temperatures were associated with increased odds of LBW, with the greatest odds observed in the 3 weeks before birth (odds ratio 1.005-1.025). These positive associations were even larger among comparison infants and null among treatment infants. CONCLUSIONS: Our study found increased odds of LBW with high weekly average temperatures throughout pregnancy and the preconception period and demonstrate mitigated effects by the LEAP 1000 CT program. More evidence on the potential of CTs to serve as adaptation interventions in low- and middle-income countries is needed to protect pregnant persons and their infants from the impacts of climate change.

The agamid lizard Phrynocephalus melanurus is restricted to Northwest China (Dzungar Basin) and the adjacent Eastern Kazakhstan (Zaisan and Alakol basins). To elucidate the phylogeography of P. melanurus, we obtained the mitochondrial DNA COI segments of 175 sampled lizards from 44 localities across the whole distribution. Phylogenetic analyses revealed two main Clades comprising five geographically structured lineages (I, IIa, IIb1, IIb2, and IIb3) that fit an isolation-by-distance (IBD) model. The divergence from the most recent common ancestor was dated to ~1.87 million years ago (Ma). Demographic analyses demonstrated lineage-specific response to past climate change: stable population for Clade I, Subclade IIb1; past population expansion for IIb3 since 0.18 Ma, respectively. Bayesian phylogeographic diffusion analyses detected initial spreading at the Saur Mount vicinity, approximately 1.8 Ma. Historical species distribution model (SDM) projected expansion of the suitable habitat in the last interglacial and shift and contraction in the last glacial maximum and Holocene epochs. The SDM predicted a drastic reduction in suitable area throughout the range as a response to future climate change. Our findings suggest that the evolution of P. melanurus followed a parapatric divergence with subsequent dispersal and adaptation to cold and dry environments during the Quaternary. Overall, this work improves our understanding of the lineage diversification and population dynamics of P. melanurus, providing further insights into the evolutionary processes that occurred in Northwest China and adjacent Eastern Kazakhstan.

This study examined the heterogeneous co-developmental trajectories of aggression and rule-breaking from middle childhood to early adolescence, as well as how these identified, distinct trajectories related to individual and environmental predictors. A total of 1944 Chinese elementary school students in grade 4 (45.5% girls, Mage = 10.06, SD = 0.57) completed measures on five occasions across two and a half years, using six-month intervals. Findings included: (a) Parallel process latent class growth modeling revealed four distinct co-developmental trajectory groups of aggression and rule-breaking: congruent-low (84.0%); moderate-decreasing aggression and high-decreasing rule-breaking (3.8%); moderate-increasing aggression (5.9%); and moderate-increasing rule-breaking (6.3%); (b) Multivariate logistic regression analyses revealed that children belonging to the high risk groups were more likely to experience multiple individual and environmental difficulties. Implications for prevention of aggression and rule-breaking were discussed.

Cyberbullying (perpetration and victimization) is a prevalent public health problem associated with a wide variety of psychopathological symptoms (e.g., depression, anxiety, delinquent behaviors, and substance use). However, the generality and specificity of relations between cyberbullying involvement and psychopathological symptoms have not been investigated. Thus, the current study used a latent dimensional approach to examine how cyberbullying (perpetration and victimization) is associated with underlying dimensions of psychopathology as well as with specific symptoms. General and specific associations were estimated by a series of structural equation models with data from 654 Chinese adolescents (52.4% girls, Mage = 12.96 years, SD = 0.67) in a three-wave study. Results indicated that cyberbullying (perpetration and victimization) was significantly and positively associated with latent internalizing and externalizing dimensions. Cyberbullying involvement was non-significantly associated with most specific symptom domains after accounting for the impact of the latent internalizing and externalizing factors. In a few cases, cyberbullying involvement was directly and uniquely associated with specific symptoms. Findings of significant general and symptom-specific associations have important implications for efforts to develop more efficient and targeted strategies for preventing and treating mental health problems associated with cyberbullying.

BACKGROUND: The involvement of ferroptosis has been found in many pathological conditions of the lung. The genetic engineering of ferroptosis-related genes may provide a potential target for the treatment of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). METHODS: Nine ferroptosis regulators and markers were collected from FerrDb and their somatic mutations and expressions were analyzed based on The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA)-LUAD cohort data. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and Cox regression analysis were performed to screen genes significantly associated with ferroptosis. The ferroptosis-related gene signature was constructed using TCGA-LUAD cohort data and was verified using the GSE cohort with pooled data for GSE30219, GSE31210, GSE37745 and GSE50081. Immune microenvironment component and mutation analysis were performed for genes in the ferroptosis-related gene signature. RESULTS: All nine ferroptosis regulators and markers were differentially expressed between normal LUAD tumor tissues and adjacent normal tissues and were related to copy number variation. The expression of 1329 genes were significantly associated with nine ferroptosis regulators and markers in the TCGA-LUAD dataset, five (ALDOA, PLK1, CD47, CENPC and TMOD3) of which were integrated into a ferroptosis-related gene signature to calculate the risk score of LUAD samples, showing a significant correlation with the abundance of immune cell infiltration and the immune score. Molecular docking showed the binding activity of natural active compound quercetin to target proteins ALDOA and CD47, as well as the binding activity of aristolochic acid to PLK1 protein and TMOD3 protein. CONCLUSIONS: In the present study, a ferroptosis-related gene signature with predictive value for LUAD prognosis was constructed, in which the gene was a potential therapeutic target for LUAD. Quercetin and aristolochic acid were potential candidates for inhibiting these targets by directly binding to them and showing high affinity and strong stability.

Our hospital admitted a patient who had difficulty in coagulation even after blood replacement, and the patient had abused caffeine sodium benzoate (CSB) for more than 20 years. Hence, we aimed to explore whether CSB may cause dysfunction in vascular endothelial cells and its possible mechanism. Low, medium, and high concentrations of serum of long-term CSB intake patients were used to treat HUVECs, with LPS as the positive control. MTT and CCK8 were performed to verify CSB's damaging effect on HUVECs. The expression of ET-1, ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and E-selectin were measured by ELISA. TUNEL assay and Matrigel tube formation assay were carried out to detect apoptosis and angiogenesis of HUVECs. Flow cytometry was applied to analyze cell cycles and expression of CD11b, PDGF, and ICAM-1. Expression of PDGF-BB and PCNA were examined by western blot. The activation of MAPK signaling pathway was detected by qRT-PCR and western blot. Intracellular Ca2+ density was detected by fluorescent probes. CCK8 assay showed high concentration of CSB inhibited cell viability. Cell proliferation and angiogenesis were inhibited by CSB. ET-1, ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and E-selectin upregulated in CSB groups. CSB enhanced apoptosis of HUVECs. CD11b, ICAM-1 increased and PDGF reduced in CSB groups. The expression level and phosphorylation level of MEK, ERK, JUN, and p38 in MAPK pathway elevated in CSB groups. The expression of PCNA and PDGF-BB was suppressed by CSB. Intracellular Ca2+ intensity was increased by CSB. Abuse of CSB injured HUVECs and caused coagulation disorders.

In biomarker evaluation/diagnostic studies, the hypervolume under the receiver operating characteristic manifold ( HUM K $$ {\mathrm{HUM}}_K $$ ) and the generalized Youden index ( J K $$ {J}_K $$ ) are the most popular measures for assessing classification accuracy under multiple classes. While HUM K $$ {\mathrm{HUM}}_K $$ is frequently used to evaluate the overall accuracy, J K $$ {J}_K $$ provides direct measure of accuracy at the optimal cut-points. Simultaneous evaluation of HUM K $$ {\mathrm{HUM}}_K $$ and J K $$ {J}_K $$ provides a comprehensive picture about the classification accuracy of the biomarker/diagnostic test under consideration. This article studies both parametric and non-parametric approaches for estimating the confidence region of HUM K $$ {\mathrm{HUM}}_K $$ and J K $$ {J}_K $$ for a single biomarker. The performances of the proposed methods are investigated by an extensive simulation study and are applied to a real data set from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative.

Abundant studies have explored the relations among deviant peer affiliation, self-control, and aggression without separating within-person from between-person effects. Moreover, it is unclear whether self-control mediates the associations between deviant peer affiliation and aggression during early adolescence. This longitudinal study used Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Model to examine the dynamic relations among deviant peer affiliation, self-control, and aggression within individuals, including examining whether self-control mediated the relations between deviant peer affiliation and aggression. A total of 4078 early adolescents (54% boys, Mage = 9.91, SD = 0.73) completed questionnaires on four occasions across 2 years. Results indicated: (a) Deviant peer affiliation and aggression positively predicted each other; (b) Self-control and aggression negatively predicted each other but were unstable; (c) Deviant peer affiliation and self-control negatively predicted each other; and (d) Self-control mediated the path from aggression to deviant peer affiliation, but not vice versa. The results more precisely identify the relations among deviant peer affiliation, self-control, and aggression within individuals, providing valuable information for prevention and intervention programs targeted at alleviating early adolescent aggression.

OBJECTIVE: The study used both person-centered (i.e., parallel process latent class growth modeling) and variable-centered (i.e., random intercept cross-lagged panel modeling) approaches to examine developmental changes in global and domain-specific self-esteem from middle childhood to early adolescence. METHOD: A total of 715 Chinese youth participated (54.3% boys; 45.7% girls; Mage = 9.96; SD = 0.51) in a 6-wave longitudinal study with 6-month intervals. RESULTS: Parallel process latent class growth modeling identified three co-developmental trajectories of global and domain-specific self-esteem: Congruent high increasing and then flattening global and domain-specific self-esteem, congruent moderate domain-specific self-esteem with convex global self-esteem, and congruent low with concave appearance and global self-esteem. Results from random intercept cross-lagged panel modeling found reciprocal within-person associations between academic self-esteem and global self-esteem; global self-esteem significantly predicted social self-esteem, while physical appearance self-esteem significantly predicted global self-esteem. CONCLUSION: Evidence was provided for top-down and bottom-up effects of self-esteem among Chinese youth. The findings provided new insight into the development of self-esteem in youth.

"Compound multi-class classification" refers to the setting where three or more main classes are involved and at least one of the main classes have multiple subclasses. A common practice in evaluating biomarker performance under "compound multi-class classification" is "subclasses pooling." In this article, we first explore the downsides of accuracy metrics based on pooled data. Then we propose a new accuracy measure proper for "compound multi-class classification" with three ordinal main classes, namely "volume under compound R O C $$ ROC $$ surface ( V U S C $$ VU{S}_C $$ )." The proposed V U S C $$ VU{S}_C $$ evaluates the accuracy of a biomarker appropriately by identifying main classes without requiring specification of an ordering for marker values of subclasses within each main class. For confidence interval estimation of V U S C $$ VU{S}_C $$ , both parametric and nonparametric methods are studied, and simulation studies are carried out to assess coverage probabilities. A subset of Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative study dataset is analyzed.
